Getting Ideas for Writing

Heyo! Today I’m going to show you how to get ideas for your writing.

My first tip is to not sit around waiting for ideas to come. You won’t get any if you sit at your desk thinking really hard. The best ideas come when you’re doing something, like taking a walk or baking or something else.

I often get a lot of good ideas from driving around in the car. If I see street names that I like, I write them down so I can use them later, like Whitewall Court or Reflection Drive. Or, if I see something strange, like a little boy wearing a traffic cone on his head. (Yes, I really did see that.)

Another thing is to listen to people talking. I mean, don’t eavesdrop or anything, but kind of listen to what people are saying. Like, “We don’t need to know that, Shawn!” I heard that at the zoo once.

Try listening to people around you too. My sister Slothys sometimes gives me good ideas. Like this one: “There was a little town, and it was great, until… psw!! Phoow!!! *explosion* Boom!”

And just write down any ideas that come to you. Here are some book ideas that I have right now:

  • Book about a fairy who was banished from her kingdom because she didn’t use her magic properly
  • A war between kids in a neighborhood (I heard some kids carrying sticks a couple weeks ago say something about a war 🤨)
  • A young fox who sets out to save the world
  • A school for unicorns
  • A doomed mermaid named Cerinthe
  • And more!

Just draw inspiration from the world around you and be yourself. Put your thoughts, emotions, embarrassing moments, skills, and experiences into your writing!
