Randomness is Good
[PLEASE NOTE: this is an OLD post. Information in this post may no longer be accurate and/or be cringy 😑]
There is a lot to be said for just picking a random book off the shelf and reading it. Skeptical? Think about it. What if you only read, say, fiction books. You would miss a lot of learning opportunities that way. If you pick a random one, though, it might be a non-fiction book. You would learn new things and realize that fiction isn’t the only genre that’s interesting (though you might still prefer fiction, like me).
Or maybe you’re this serious, scholar-ish type of person who likes non-fiction books. You should get creative! Perhaps your random book is a cook book, or a D.I.Y craft book. A random book could help you learn to be more open-minded.
Yet another situation: You really like to make things, so you read lots and lots of craft and sewing books. That’s great! But that might become wearing over time. You’ll lose interest. What if your random book was a fiction book? Getting lost in imaginary worlds will give you new ideas, so that you can craft more creatively.
I have found lots and lots of good books this way. Take, for example, Jokelopedia. This is 100% the funniest joke book ever to be written. Or the time when I found D.I.Y. Dollhouse. My younger sister once found a book from a new series called The Sisters Grimm. I picked it up, started to read, and it became one of my favorite series.
Why don’t you try it? You’ll be surprised what you find.
